FORT BENNING, Ga. - A U.S. Army Ranger and Penn State graduate was killed in a single tactical vehicle accident in Fort Benning, Georgia. 1st Lt. Connor Bednarzyk, 25, was killed in the accident Sept. 7. Bednarzyk was assigned as the platoon leader of the Distribution Platoon, Echo Company, 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, according to a U.S. Army news release. The day of different activities took place at the Pleasant Gap Fire Company and in surrounding areas. OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — Former NFL running back Alex Collins, who played five seasons for the Seattle Seahawks and Baltimore Ravens, was killed in a motorcycle crash in South Florida, authorities said. He was 28. Collins was driving a motorcycle that crashed into a sport-utility vehicle Sunday night in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida, the Broward County Sheriff's Office said in a news release. The SUV was making a left turn when Collins' motorcycle hit its rear passenger side.
SILVER SPRING, Md. (WJLA) — There has been an uptick of bear sightings in parts of Maryland, according to wildlife officials. Last week, Montgomery Parks shared a photo of a recent bear sighting, captured on a Ring doorbell camera walking through a front yard in Germantown. It came with a warning: bear season. In the past week, at least three bear sightings have been reported in the county -- in the Sligo Creek area of Silver Spring, another near the Northwest Golf course off of Layhill Road, and in Boyds.
BEDFORD COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — The Bedford County Humane Society took in what they call "an overwhelming number of dogs" from a Bedford home earlier this year. On New Year’s Eve, nearly 100 dogs were rescued from one home that was reportedly filled with dog cages stacked floor to ceiling. Several local shelters and foster owners stepped in to take care of the dogs, which suffered from various conditions. Shelter manager Kathy Ramsey said that rescuing the dogs “was emotionally, physically, and mentally very draining.
Clearfield Co., PA (WJAC) — Pennsylvania State Police are searching for a Chester County man, believed to be missing/endangered, who was last seen in Clearfield County. Troopers say 39-year-old Christopher Matt Bryant, of West Grove, has not been seen or heard from, by his family, since Monday, July 4th. Authorities say Bryant's truck was located at a truck stop, located off of Route 870, in Clearfield County. Troopers say witnesses and surveillance video reportedly shows Bryant at his truck on the night of July 7th.
TACOMA, Wash. (KOMO) — An employee responding to a business alarm was shot by burglars early Thursday in Tacoma, Washington. The shooting occurred at 2:59 a.m., according to the Tacoma Police Department. Surveillance video of the burglary shows an armed robber shooting an employee after responding to the business alarm. The business owner provided the surveillance footage of the shooting to KOMO. Suspected burglars drove through the doors of the business — either a restaurant or grocery store, police said — before 3 a.
In Blair County, work is ongoing to dismantle the former Appvion Paper Mill in Roaring Springs. The more than 300-acre site has been in existence for nearly 120 years. When the paper mill closed in 2021, around 300 people lost their jobs. While there have been no formal plans announced for the site, the Altoona-Blair County Development Corp. did propose a two-phase redevelopment concept to Roaring Spring Borough Council in February 2023.
